Philadelphia Community Bail Fund - Annual Mama's Day Bail Out (May 2022)
Youth artists from the Young Artist Program and People's Paper Co-Op fellows teamed up to create a design and screenprint tote bags at Second State Press studio as a welcome gift for mamas and caregivers returning home via Philadelphia Community Bail Fund's annual Mama's Day Bail Out.
To create the design, YAP and PPC gathered together over a series of 3 workshops. We asked each other, "What does freedom feel like to you?" Among our responses: a night full of stars, the deep love and trust shared among best friends, the sun and the wind, taking time to do things slowly. So many of us talked about water, from floating in the ocean to leisurely morning showers to the sound of rivers free-flowing whichever way they like.
In my illustration of our final design, I wanted to reflect all the joy and power I felt from everyone in the room, centering our QUEENS! as well as themes of transformation and rebirth. Each element draws from our collaborative sessions and conversations among community. Donate to the bail fund
A Tattoo for Ivy
Design request: Celestial meets Afro-centric, meets futuristic. Succulents represent strength, locs are growth and commitment, and space is open and beautiful. Those are kind of the symbols that bring me comfort. Basically I want something that represents me and these are the kinds of pictures that I feel aligned with. The one picture is of the face of some who is plus sized so there are rolls and puffiness that I really love.
